Tala Madani (American/Iranian, b.1981) is a Contemporary painter, known for her darkly humorous narrative paintings. Working in loose, expressive brushwork, Madani’s work often depicts balding, bearded men engaged in absurd activities that are both clownish and ambiguously sexual. She has described her work as drawing from her Iranian heritage, and seeks to examine and confront traditional social and gender norms.
Born in Tehran, Madani is today based out of Los Angeles. She obtained her BA in political science from Oregon State University 2004, and her MFA from Yale University in 2006. Her first solo show in New York took place at Lombard-Freid Projects in 2007, and she has been exhibiting regularly ever since. Other solo exhibitions include those at Pilar Corrias in London, the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles, and the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis. She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including the Catherine Doctorow Prize for Contemporary Painting, Kees Verwey Fellowship, and The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten residency in Amsterdam.
